Driverless cars: the imitation game?

Abstract
Autonomous vehicles can be the breakthrough of this century: from drones, to cars and trucks, they promise to change our way of commuting, travelling, shipping goods, cultivating food, etc.. In particular, autonomous cars can enhance dramatically the safety of road travels, can reduce accidents, congestions, CO2 emissions and overall  can enhance the comfort of drivers and passengers. However the road to fully autonomous vehicles is still brimful of technical challenges, and I am going to discuss some of them: robustness and safety of electronic systems, sensor and sensor fusion, artificial intelligence, human factors (trust, regulations, etc.), simulation and testing.

Bio
Dr Valentina Donzella is an Associate Professor in the Intelligent Vehicles group at WMG, University of Warwick (UK). She leads the MSc program in Smart Connected and Autonomous Vehicles and her research interest are sensor for autonomous vehicles, and particularly integrated optical sensors. Before joining WMG, in 2015, Valentina was a researcher at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver (BC, Canada) working on integrated optical sensors in the Silicon Photonics group.
