The use of synchrotron radiation by a great variety of fields has increased worldwide. This, to a large extent, is a result of the availability of the much brighter light sources, which allowed the development of new experimental techniques. In the first part of this talk Prof. Schio will briefly present some principles on how synchrotrons are used to generate radiation and describe the synchrotron radiation properties. He also will emphasize some characteristics of SIRIUS which was planned to be a state-of-the-art light source.
On the second part of the talk Schio will present the possibilities at SIRIUS to the study surfaces and interfaces. Our surface science support laboratory provides infrastructure for sample preparation that comprises molecular beam epitaxy, pulsed laser deposition, equipped with reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and scanning probe (tunneling and force) microscopes (STM - AFM). In this contribution the professor will illustrate the potential of this instrumentation with surface science examples from our users and internal research.
